A deadlatch is a lock that operates by pulling the door shut. The lock can then be opened by a key externally, typically featuring a knob or thumbturn on the inside
A deadbolt has a bolt that is thrown by a key externally, and a key/thumbturn internally.
They are both classed as deadlocks as they are lockable from both sides of the door and require a key to open the door , single cylinder deadbolts being the exception as a thumbturn will manually throw the bolt from the inside.
This functionality is the opposite of a vestibule lock, where seeking egress (exiting) is available at all times.
Choosing between a deadlatch or a deadbolt depends on a matter of convenience versus security. With a deadbolt you must have your keys with you to lock the door, whilst a deadlatch involves pulling the door shut. However, it is impossible to lock yourself out of your house with a deadbolt where as pulling a door shut without consdering your keys is the number one cause of lockouts
